Nick Ferris,Marketing Hiring Basics Part 2

Nick Ferris is a global marketer with over 25 years of B2B and B2C marketing experience. This is a very quick overview of funnel marketing.

We just covered one good question for hiring marketing candidates, so let’s press on and look at some others.

Nick Ferris recommends asking candidates which campaigns from other companies / individuals they admire or that made an impression on them.

The reason behind this question is that it shows if the marketer is open to ideas from others, is paying attention to other marketing campaigns and wiling to learn. If the marketer is blinkered and not watching what others are doing that may not be ideal recalls Nick Ferris.

Like many things in life, marketing is not about reinventing the wheel every day. That would be impossible. So marketers often copy other campaigns they see and adapt. Changes in fonts, copy, headlines, graphics, call to actions and so on says Nick Ferris, are all ways a marketer may adapt a campaign they see and apply it to their product.

So it’s important that marketer candidates are aware of what is going on at least in their own vertical industry says Nick Ferris. Whether that is subscribing to your competition and seeing how they market to you (more on that later) or following conferences or awards, or even subscribing to bloggers, there are a ton of ways that marketers can keep abreast of what is happening in their industry and make sure they can not only learn from their own work, but build collectively and get inspired from the work of others.
